I knew this would be the best place to ask you wonderful ladies!
i would love to go blonde and am wondering if this could be done DIY? If so what products should i use?
or is it best left to the professionals? If so would they get it to blonde straight away or would it require repeat visits?

Hints and Tips please! Want to go blonde

Perhaps going to the hairdresser to go blonde and then maintaining it at home would be a good compromise? My hair was light brown and my hairdresser got it 'barbie blonde' in one go with very little damage, even though so many other hairdressers said it would have to be done slowly. It can be done, you just have to find someone who will do it. I think a lot of my previous hairdressers told me they would only do highlights and then build it up were saying it so that I would have to keep coming back. Goodluck! xx
Ive tried a coulpe of home kits to go blonde and would have to say that ive never found them as good as the result you get from the professionals. The colours never as light as want it and the maximum you could get was upto four shades lighter than your natural colour. Would definatley visit a salon they have the knowledge and products to get the result your after.
I would recommend going to a professional for blonde colour. I have been through the various stages of blondes , platinum , violet, more goldy and now my natural blonde. Any time I attempted a home colour it always come out terribly, my hair grabbed colour really well which wasnt so great for at home colours :). I think blonde is a bit harder to get looking right at home.
I would definitely go to the hair dresser for that one. There are many things to consider - one being how much red is in your hair.
I had a go many years ago and ended up rather pink! Then had to overdye with another colour to hide the oops.
Bleaching can be super hard on the hair and needs care to get it right otherwise you risk losing your hair to breakage and damage.

Definitely get professional help at the hairdressers here.
They will really have the best products and it may mean they would have to use a colour stripper if any previous hair colours remain.
I wa sdark blonde once and went auburn with no problem because blonde hair absorbed colour very well so at least if you dont like the result it will cover quickly.
Perhaps you may even need it done in a couple of stages to remove old colour then go down a few shades at a time.
If you do go blonde think how your make up/clothing will need to change to go with the blonde. One thing about going lighter is that it will continually need root touch ups too.
Have fun

I'm probably going to be the only one to say this, but I would do it at home... After spending over $800 at the salon to get my hair bleached blonde, I truly regret it and understand how easy it was to do at home. I had black black hair, and they had to bleach and tone my head a complete whooping 6 times to get it to the shade I want (Note: it is now lighter than it is in my profile picture). They don't exactly charge you easy either. I watched the hairdresser do it to my hair - and I can't believe I didn't do it myself. You literally just need to grab some bleach and bleach your hair and then tone after. I watched youtube after youtube video on how you can do it yourself and I honestly do regret it. I also went in for a regrowth touch up, where they charged me $120. I watched what he did and did it at home from then on. There are also youtube videos to help with that as well. Honestly it sounds so scary, but it's really not.
@melly650 It's actually super easy. I think the only reason people don't do it themselves is that they are scared of the results. I'm not sure if you are familiar with the hair level scale (http://www.hairfad.com/hair-color-chart.html) but I started off at level 2 with my natural hair and I'm now on level 12. When I was at level 7ish, I decided I'd spent too much money and would do it myself. I went to this hair product kiosk at Dressmart in Auckland and told her I wanted to go lighter without going to the salon and she gave me 30V peroxide and powdered bleach and printed me off a set of instructions of how to do it. Came home, watched a hundred youtube tutorials and got to google before, and started on it. In one go I managed to get myself up 6 levels. It's not a process that can be done overnight, and it actually took me 1 month to get the desired shade. If you have dark hair, keep in mind that you will need to bleach it multiple times, and it will go orange - just bleach again or tone. But my number one tip is to research, research, research. Research the product for your hair type, your hair colour, and any worries or issues you have. I researched what would happen if I put too much bleach, what colour toner to use, how long I needed to wait etc...
I used to bleach my own hair when I was a young teen. I found it worked better on my non-dyed hair to go blonde. the rest would go orangey but I would just go over it again to get it a white blonde.
I used to use the nordic (I think that is the brand, they are in the blue boxes), the extra light one. I think it says on the box that it does up to 6 shades lighter or something like that. It's been a while now since I've gone blonde. I did have to use a extra deep moisterising conditioner and I had to be careful as sometimes the ends would break off when I was washing the bleach out too!

Another here who suggests hair salon to have it done... they are gentler on the hair, less risk of damage and are able to reduce the chance of having orange hair (or at least the degree of orange). It will be gradual process but at least your hair will be healthier for it. I suggest poping into your salon and talking it over with your hairdresser or stylist

I've tried to bleach my dark hair at home a few times every time it ended in disaster, except for one time a couple of months ago I used the L'Oreal obre lightening kit on the lengths of my hair and love the result. If you're intent on bleaching your hair at home I suggest this is a good way to start? I want to lighten my hair for summer/spring too but I'm not willing to do anything high risk or very damaging so I used the L'orel obre kit for brown hair last time, this time the lengths of my hair are light enough to use the kit for blonde hair. Depends if you want a natural looking blonde or platinum?
Im in the same predictament at the moment.
I can't really afford to spend shit loads at the hairdressers but atleast you know if they screw it up or doesn't look right you can go back and make them fix it, at their expense. If you screw it up at home your stuck with it or will end up at the hairdressers anyway haha.
I have been blonde before but it was a gradual build up of foils but my hair always took it really well and never went crappy but I currently have ombre from dark brown to blonde-ish, I got it done at a hairdresser but they screwed it up so bad i end up having to go back 3 times, I guess the key is finding a hairdresser that knows what they are doing.
Good luck x

I have dark brown hair (well did) I went to the salon and got blonde streaks. Then went back for thicker ones to get used to it. Then took the leap and went blonde. I'd got back and they were keeping a close eye on it. The last time I said I'm not sure what to do. She looked at my hair and said it would break off badly and wouldn't feel comfortable doing it anymore.
so the decision was made for me to go natural dark brown again.
Now I'm trying being a red head!

I've just gone blonde after having various bright colours in my hair for almost a year. Mine was a home job (with the help of my wonderful friends), purely because I can't afford to spend the $500+ it would cost to do it in a salon. Rezee mentioned that she used the same supermarket lightener that I used: Schwarzkopf Nordic Blonde Ultimate Lightener L1++. It is pretty harsh on your hair, but I think it does a really good job of lightening and it's easy to use. I needed to go from light blue blonde overnight so I used 4 boxes of lightener (two at a time because my hair is so long) to bleach it, and then two boxes of an Ice Blonde hair dye over the top, and now I've got uniform bleach blonde hair. But I have had quite a bit bleach breakage and hair fall as a result of doing it so quickly.
I think you can definitely do it at home, just lighten it more slowly than I did and use a good deep conditioning treatment and you'll be fine!
