How to get rid of bad dandruff

What does everyone use to get rid of dandruff? What products or homemade remedies do you use that you find effective? I've tried using head and shoulders and sunsilk. Head and shoulders got rid of mild dandruff but after using for a few of times I found it was ineffective, like my hair was getting "immune" or too used to it, as if I switch between shampoos or take a break from using it I find it suddenly becomes effective again. But if I have really bad dandruff which is really flakey, even after one use I find it doesn't get rid of the dandruff completely and my scalp still looks flakey. I've heard tea tree oil can be used or maybe apple cider vinegar (saw the thread about this a few weeks ago and seems to have multiple uses), but have never tried these methods. Any thoughts? Would love to hear what other people with dandruff use. Thank you :)

I suffer the same thing so will be looking to see what every one else recommends. I have done the whole olive oil in the hair for a while and that helped but it still comes back would rather not have to go thru days and days of really oily hair to treat it.

Treat it from the inside as opposed to just treating the symptoms!

muzz-nz what do you mean? Do you mean it's to do with the type of food you eat, or get some medication or vitamins? I've been to the doctor in the past and was given some shampoo which helped keep it down for a bit but then my hair got "immune" to it and became less effective (like what head and shoulders did), and I have to keep going back to the doctor to get more. I feel like I can control it more when I switch between products every now and then

Jveenis, do you just use pure olive oil and massage on the scalp?

my sister got bad dandruff and found that that eco shampoo worked for her... brush your hair more.. Some experts say that people who do not consume enough foods that contain zinc, B vitamins, and some types of fats are more prone to dandruff.....theres alot of factors to why people get dandruff...so therefore itll probly just bee trial n error to find what works best for you and whats causing it....which you may never know

If your scalp really is that dry, then your system is definitely lacking something.  I used to have the same but I started taking a high-concentrate fish oil called Ultra Clean EPA/DHA Plus twice a day and by the end of the third day, I had noticely a massive difference.

Your scalp is dry because your body doesn't have enough good oil, so maybe start with a fatty suppliment for a while and see how that goes, but obviously - since I'm not a doctor, check with a health professional before ingesting anything just in case your body doesn't agree with it.

Oh I see, thanks so much for all your help and suggestions girls! Funny that the doctor never mentioned anything about lack of oils but it makes sense. Miss_rain85 where do you get Eco shampoo from?

There are many different ways of doing it, but you are basically going to put apple cider vinegar on your scalp. You can do full strength or you can water it down (I do full strength). The guy on the website said that he put it on his head when it was dry, but I found that since I have such thick hair, it was taking too much vinegar to just get it to touch my scalp. So this is what I do - I get in the shower and get my hair wet, then I take a small bottle of the vinegar, tilt my head back and close my eyes, and pour it on. You could also do this in the sink if you wanted. Be careful not to get it in your eyes. (warning: the first time you do this it might sting a bit, but don't worry it's not going to burn you). When I first did it, it stung a lot. Now when I do it, it just tingles a little. Wait as long as you can, I would say about 5-10 minutes. Then rinse well, shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse.

Hi. I am just gonna copy and paste from what I just posted on snother thread about the benefits of coconut oil.... here tis:
Coconut oil seems to be having its moment in the sun. I myself have found it is one of the only and I do mean only things to sort out my dry hair and dandruff/flaky scalp. Dandruff is s a fungal growth, yuk. And coconut oil has anti fungal properties. I have tried everything and I am glad to say I wont waste any more money on crap that doesnt work! I soak my whole head scalp and hair from root to tip wrap it in a towel (one I keep for this purpose it tends to smell a bit odd when washed. Not sure why?) Leave for 30 mins or blitz your hair with a hair dryer to really help it penetrate the hair follicle. Or I even sleep with it overnight sometimes. The trick is to shampoo it out TWICE. Well. Then condition and you're good to go.

thanks so much for sharing that Honey76, I will have to try that. How much coconut oil do you use? Just enough to coat your hair or really drench your hair so it gets a good soak?

i really appreciate everyone's suggestions and helpful hints

I wash my hair with Schwarzkoph BC Hair Therapy Hair and Scalp Dandruff Control shampoo and once out of the shower use the accompanying fluid - it has actually worked wonders! The fluid is definitely key! I highly recommend this pair :)

I always had this problem, like none of the antidandruff shampoos and products seemed to help. But I asked my doctor about it one day, and it turns out that its not dandruff, its actually a form of dermititus. She gave me a script for medicated shampoo that I use like every second time I wash my hair, I just use my shampoo and conditionor after it like normal. It has made a HUGE difference :) I basically never have flakes anymore or anything.
She said that you can buy treatments for it from the pharmarcy (over the counter) but they are really expensive but my script only costs me like $5 every 3 months or so :)

I get dandruff too. Ive also used Head and Shoulders and it works well for me. But then after a while it returns. I just googled it out of curiosity, alot of the ladies suggestions were suggested. I'll have to try some of them out too. Like the cocnut oil, cider vinegar, also baby oil, baking soda and lemon paste.
Well, my opinion won't be original, but still.
Have been struggling with my dry scalp for years, till I found a nice combo of natural oil tree based shampoo and conditioner. It's sulfate and silicone-free set, also it smells well. Though you may find it too oily, so you may look through the other options in an article like this

If it's a dry, itchy flakey scalp this shampoo and conditioner set really helps with that. Also Ethique Heali Kiwi really helps.
