Could this become *my* superior preference. . .

I've been dying my hair for 20 years, and will try anything once. I hadn't actually tried this product before, that I remember, so when I was short of things to review and it was on special in Countdown I decided to check it out. Being a new product (to me) I did something I almost never do, and did a 48 hour patch test. I didn't react, so I went ahead and tried out the product.

L'Oreal Paris Preference Hair Colour comes in a black and grey box, with a very 'modelly' looking cover model in terms of her look. I don't usually assume my hair will look like the models, so I like to read the info on the box. This one claims that you'll get up to 8 weeks of brilliant, lustrous hair... literally every hair dye I have ever used has given me 2-3 weeks. I will update this if I'm wrong, but I am expecting this one to be the same. It also includes a 'Hi-shine Elixir' and claims 'perfect grey coverage.

The bottles are seriously easy to mix together. The colourant is a liquid, and you simply pour it into the applicator bottle along with the 'Hi Shine Elixir' (pretty much a vial of nice-smelling oil) and shake it all together.

The applicator bottle is a nice squat shape with a long thin nozzle, which makes application easier.

I hate the gloves that came with this product. I found them hard to get on, and too tight, then they ripped, so I threw them out and used a spare pair I had in the cupboard.

I find this dye to be quite pungent, and you should definitely ventilate the room while using it. I also found that it stained if I got it on anything other than my hair, but that could well be more to do with the shade. I used Shade 3: Brasilia, which is their darkest brown.

The colour thickens a bit in your hair and sits well. It washes out easily and cleanly.

The conditioner provided is a generous 54ml of a thick, delicious, salon scented cream which leaves hair feeling nourished and healthy - and there is more than enough for at least half a dozen decent conditions of your dyed hair.

My hair has been left richly coloured, glossy, and looking great. I will amend this review if the product lets me down in some way with longevity etc but at this stage I'm pretty stoked with this as a new find (apart from those nasty gloves!)

Great hair colour!

I got this from Farmers in the shade P38 Deep Purple Pearl. It looked very purple on the box and even on the little chart on the box it looked like it would take to my already brunette hair quite well. I put it in my hair for the required amount of time and then set about washing it out. Washing it out took ages and ages but often with purples which I tend to go for it does anyway. The colour that I got on my skin didn't stain (I'm terrible and get it everywhere). This hair colour now comes with a colour extender which it recommends you put through your hair at three and six weeks after the initial colour. After I had done the initial colour the colour payoff was fairly good for a purple on already brunette hair but I wouldn't say it matched the colour payoff that was shown on the box where it shows you what to expect with varying hair shades. This colour did cover up my greys extremely well and on that point alone I would repurchase it again because it's the best home job box colour I've used in that respect. I put the colour extender in at 2.5 and 5 weeks after the initial colouring because I found the bright, impactful purple faded quickly, as purples do, and wanted to give it a bit of a boost. The colour extender made a noticeable difference and was well worth including in the box. It also came with a deep conditioning treatment which was really good and left my hair soft and lovely for days after I had used it. There was heaps of that treatment too so I was able to do it weekly for six weeks after I had coloured my hair. In the sun this colour looked amazing and it really sparkled and looked super purple. I was pretty happy with this product and will repurchase it again soon. Highly recommend it!

a decent supermarket hair dye

I've never been one to dye my own hair but during lock down I decided to give it a go! I gave myself just small highlights and money pieces and they came out extremely blonde (I had purchased platinum blonde) without too much dryness or damage.

I then bought another one for my boyfriend who wanted some streaks. We left it on for over 50 minutes and used the purple toning conditioner afterwards. However, his hair is much darker than mine (dark brown compared to dirty blonde) and the highlights came out more orange than blonde. I would not attribute this outcome to the product, as we expected it would not turn out as well as my own hair did and that if he wanted to achieve blonde highlights he would need to have multiple sessions with a hairdresser.

Overall, I think it is a good option if you already have relatively light hair and want to get some blonde highlights without breaking the bank at a hair salon. The product comes with clear instructions on how to use it so it is relatively easy.

Tips: Be weary if you are using it on DARK hair! :)

Hair colour

I used the platinum blonde shade from this range as I wanted to achieve a lighter look on my hair.

I was a bit hesistant because of the price but decided to treat myself and buy it.

I found the packaging to be effective because I felt like I was buying a top knotch product because of the classic black box.

Application was simple enough and I could bare the smell. It wasn't to overpowering like some of the blonde hair colours I have used in the past.

I left the hair colour on for the desired amount of time and washed it off but was a little bit sad to see the hair colour hadn't really done much for me.

It came with a toner treatment which wasn't really helpful and I found myself using another toner to try and enhance the silver tones.

I would use this product again but would recommend some good oil treatments afterward which is expected when going blonde :)

Nothing special

Bought this in the platinum shade as I wanted to touch up my roots to match the rest of my light blonde hair. Being I have been bleaching my hair blonde for years, I knew what I was looking for but decided to try something different and paid abit extra for this. I left on for 45 minutes and rinsed out and used the conditioner that this came with. I did find my hair came out a bit brassy, but with a good fudge toner it came out blonde. My hair did feel quite damaged afterwards though so I'd definitely recommend monitoring it quite closely so you don't fry your hair, as with any bleach/colouring products though.

Tips: Use a good deep conditioning treatment and toner if your hair is slightly brassy.

L'Oreal Paris Preference

There's alot if the preference lines from this brand I used Alaska 10.21. Forest I was removing left over temporary colours - those designed to wash out but blue and green are difficult... The colour remover I used was designed for fashion colours it did okay but of course there was still some greeny tinge left over. I was able to use the Alaska straight away unlike most hair colour removers which do not recommend this. It worked in the sense that it did lighten but my hair was not dark to begin with. It did not make my hair white blonde on the box but it wasn't bad I wasn't expecting it to be white anyway. It was fairly ashy in some places. After this I tried a light light pink temporary to try minimise or colour correct the left over green blue tinge which it didn't really do much. Next I used yellow / light orange in most of my hair and a little bright stronger pink than before (temporary colours) hair took to these well though the yellow orange was not as bright as I had wanted - I was going for either bright fluro yellow almost or fluro orange. So after this the orange and yellow washed out quite quickly and my whole hair had a green tinge to it. I don't think the green was all over or as bad as it was before so I wonder if the dye had something to do with it. The temporary dyes are supposedly Vegan/natural but it could still be something to do with the combination. I wouldn't say I wouldn't ever use this again but It is not my new go to hair lightener. Also I didn't notice high shine. Now I have dark purple in my hair and it is sticking really well compared to the yellow orange & pink / red put in previously since using. This probably because my hair is now damaged from this product and the colour remover plus the purple has blue in it. A few areas of my hair are already blonde / don't take the temporary colour well probably because it's porous.

Black splatter everywhere

I was really excited about using this as i spent a little more this time round, Awesome coverage and love that it gives you a big conditioner that apparently does 6 treatments depending on hair length. I prob wont buy again as it was quite runny and splattered all over the place. Also was excited about the gloves being black(felt more pro) but i could barely get them on with out tearing them, lucky i managed but they might want to look at the sizing, def made it hard to aplly with tight gloves also

Results will vary

I bought this after already lightening my hair to do regrowth and to lighten my hair further. It was already quite light but I had some darker sections that still remained. This wasn't on special nor is it the cheapest on the shelf but I thought that would mean it would do a great job. I was eager to try it and finally get the platinum look I wanted.

So that evening once the kids were in bed I made my way through the instructions and it was a bit confusing as all the colour/lighteners directions are on the same page so you have to search out your chosen one... that done and understood I got myself ready. It was easy to mix and apply, I managed to do my hair with the one kit as it was above my shoulders in length and I waited for the length of time specified. It wasn't uncomfortable or anything like that, but the smell was stronger than I had hoped (manageable though).

So I left it on a further 5 mins longer than stated as my hair didn't look very light... in fact it looked darker than it was when I started... I started to feel concerned and checked the packaging again to make sure I had the right colour... I did, but it wasn't looking right and way darker than the picture on the packet.

I washed it out as per instructions and I was fearful of what had occurred. It was browner than I was to start with... how?? was something mislabeled in the packet? I was so upset. I woke my husband to show him... he said I thought you were going lighter?

I had applied the special conditioner as directed in the hope that it would do something magical but alas it didn't do anything other than condition it. Being particularly unhappy with the results and not wanting to damage my hair by doing another lightening immediately after I decided to throw some colours over top to mask it. So my blues went green, my pinks weren't very bright and well I felt happier I was still eager to rectify this.

In hind site I should have contacted the company to let them know but I put it down to me choosing the wrong colour or maybe I had done something wrong but I know that I had the right one and I followed every instruction. Chalked it up and moved on.

Preference Rose extender

My hair colour to start with is 2nd lightest blonde on the chart. Going by the guide i was impressed on the box what the result would be like. Followed directions to the letter, unfortunately it turned out nothing like what it ideally should be.... or thereabouts. You cannot see the pink/rose in my hair it is so pale. Even after using the colour extender, following instructions, it made absolutely no difference to the colour, it was no more pink/rose than it was before. Very disappointed.

Tips: If anyone could give tips on this it would be great cos i was not impressed and will not buy again. A shame really cos this was the brand i always use.
